(SAINT LOUIS – NOVEMBER 23, 2018)  –- The Board of Directors of the Greater St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame announced the award winners for 2019 on Friday.  In addition to its induction Class of 2019, the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame will honor four individuals who have made significant contributions to baseball in St. Louis.  The awards include:

The Bob Burnes Award for outstanding achievement in professional baseball by an individual from the Greater St. Louis Area:  Al Nipper, 7-year MLB Veteran player with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians.  He played high school baseball at Hazelwood West and played collegiately at Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University).

The Jack Buck Award for outstanding support of baseball by a member of the St. Louis media:  Mike Claiborne, KMOX Sports Personality and Host of “This Week in Cardinal Baseball” and “LIVE at Shannons” as well as his contributions as a member of the Cardinal Radio Network broadcast team

The Bob Broeg Award for outstanding achievement as a high school coach in the St. Louis area will go to Michael D. Russell, former head baseball coach at Lutheran North High School. He retired in 2013 after 39 years of coaching. His teams won 16 district championships, 7 sectional championships and 6 ABC League Championships.  He amassed over 500 wins as head coach.

The Greater STL Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame Legacy Award was created to honor and recognize those organizations, teams or individuals who have inspired generations of players, coaches, umpires and fans at all levels to enjoy, support and perpetuate the game of baseball.  This year’s honoree is Martin Mathews -Mathews-Dickey Boys and Girls Club.
